Wedding has plenty to offer:
idyllic little gardens on the Panke, restored industrialists' villas, refurbished tenements - all of this belongs to central Berlin. A wind of change has been blowing through one of the busiest areas of the city for some time: an old match factory was converted into a Children's Museum; in a rear courtyard a theatre workshop, the "Glass Case" (Glaskasten) has been created, a well-known meeting hall for the worker's movement has become a cultural centre and empty shops display works of art.

Since 1 January 2001, Wedding belongs to the administrative area of "Mitte" ("Centre").

Wedding has a lively commercial and recreational life. People from all over the world live here and have turned what was once a working-class area into a highly urbanised and diverse neighbourhood.

A little history:
The village of Wedding was first documented in 1251. At that time there were already numerous mills on the Panke, a small river which still winds its way through the heart of the district.

The first church in Wedding, designed by the famous architect, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, was consecrated in 1835. The old Nazareth Church, it is now used as the parish hall.

Berlin's first electric tram started running in 1895 from Badstrasse in Wedding to Pankow. In the same year, an electric goods and passenger train - the world's first underground train - linked up the individual AEG factories. AEG, originally the German Edison Company was established in Wedding in 1887.

Was the famous imposter and prankster Captain of Köpenick ever in Wedding? Yes, indeed he was. On 13th October 1906 the shoemaker, Wilhelm Voigt, disguised himself as a Prussian captain and, taking command of ten soldiers, went to Köpenick where he went down in history. It was there that he robbed the city treasury and was sentenced to four years in prison the following December.

In 1927 the world famous architect, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe built four "living cubes" in the Afrikanische Strasse in Wedding.

"Red" Wedding:
Days of Revolution: on 9th November 1918 the Wedding workers joined the General Strike and marched on the city centre under the Red Flag. Red Flags were flown on all Wedding factories. At the Wedding borders, in front of the Maikäfer ("June Bug") Barracks on Chausseestrasse, officers opened fire on the demonstrators, killing two workers. In Wedding itself, the revolution passed off without bloodshed.

5th March 1933: at the last free elections, only a minority of Wedding's inhabitants (61,000) voted for the Hitler regime, with 92,000 votes for the German Communist Party and 52,000 for the Social Democrats.
