Surroundings
There are many interesting excursions to try near Schwarzburg. E.g. the "Fröbelturm" (tower) in Oberweißbach, the mountain railway in Lichtenhain (the steepest narrow-gauge train of the world), the reservoir in Hohenwarte, where you can bathe or take a romantic boattrip. You could also take a leisurely Kremserfahrt (horse drawn carriage) through the romantic Schwarzatal (tal=valley).

On a small mountain overlooking the town of Schwarzburg you will find the castle Schwarzburg which is surrounded on three sides by the river Schwarza. From the once authentic baroque grounds the emperor's edifice remains as well as the castle's outer walls. The emperor hall is inviting for an interesting museum visit. From June to September there are cultural events such as concerts and summer theatre taking place before and in the emperor's hall (left picture).

At the entrance of the valley of Schwarza one can see the emblem of Blankenburg on the house mountain, the mighty castle complex Greifenstein (right picture). Every year in June there are medieval festivals there which bring back a bit of romanticism from past times. Especially worth seeing is the falconer's presentations, which take place daily in the main season and by appointment during the rest of the year. One can also enjoy solid meals at the castle restaurant.
